Luci waited for Aharon to disappear back into the shop. He had struggled to drag his eyes off the male. She understood why, Zane was captivating, but until she knew what he wanted, she wasn’t about to relax.

“How much do you weigh?” Zane asked.

Luci stopped mid-bite of her bagel as she looked up at him. The sincerity of his question both offended her and seemed logical at the same time. Swallowing hard, she stared at him. “Pardon?”

“Weight? As in body mass? How much do you…”

Luci held up her hand to stop him. “I understand the concept, what I don’t understand is why you wish to end your life.”

His head tilted.

“Asking a woman her weight as an opening line is easily a motive for murder. I know I could justify it in five different languages and make it stand up in court without breaking out in a sweat.”

“I don’t understand,” Zane looked uneasy, “I’m simply asking the information I require to achieve the desired results.”

“Your death?”

“Not possible.”

“Oh, I guarantee you it is, and don’t let my girlish figure deceive you. I’m not all bagels and bon bons. I will not only hire the hitman, but get him off all charges.”

Zane nodded. “You are very much your father’s daughter.”

“He isn’t my father.”

“Isn’t he?”

“On a purely biological sense, perhaps.”

“If you say so.” He nodded. “Back to your weight.”

Luci pushed her bagel aside, her appetite suddenly gone with talk of her ass. Her arms folded across her chest as she sized him up. “It must be important, otherwise it wouldn’t still be getting asked, so why? Why is the size of my ass important?”

“Your ass has nothing to do with it. I just want to adjust the portal needed to accommodate both of us to travel together.”

“Oh, I see,” she paused for a second, “wait, portal?”

Zane nodded. “It’s the easiest way to travel, your father prefers to grab one of the horses, but unless you know what you’re doing, they can be unpredictable.”

“Horses?”

“Of the apocalypse. Yes.”

“I’ll take the portal,” Luci said, feeling suddenly weak.

“Thought you would.”

Picking up the glass filled with tea, she asked, “What is it you do for Natas? Are you an errand runner?”

“Sometimes. I do whatever he wishes me to do.”

“Anything?”

“He wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t necessary, so yes. It’s what we do, serve Natas.”

“We?”

“Demons.”

“Demons?”

“I’m sorry, are you impaired? Do I need to get more help? I assumed this would have all been discussed, and I was just to turn up and escort you to your fath…” he stopped and changed his word, “to Natas’ office.”

She shook her head. “This is the first I’ve heard about it. I agreed to go to meet him, but there was nothing said about the how. I guess that’s my fault, I really should have inquired more. It’s not like taking a cab across town is it?”

Zane smirked. “Nothing like it, I’m afraid.”

“And you’re a demon?”

“Correct.”

“You don’t look like a demon.”

“Compared to what? Hollywood? It’s not like we advertise it, walk around with our horns out or tail whipping around.
